Achaemenid bronze lotus bowl

£500

An Achaemenid (Persian) bronze drinking bowl with flared sides and an elaborate lotus pattern to the underside.

We are delighted to be able to offer an item from the Achaemenid Empire, famed for its opulent capital Persepolis which was sacked by Alexander The Great; and also its legendary kings such as Xerxes and Darius.

The lotus blossom pattern (which is both incised and shallowly moulded) may be a reference to the original use of the cup and the ancient practice of imbibing the hallucinogenic extracts of lotus flowers.

The bowl is made from very thick and heavy metal, implying that it was used by a wealthy person; the bowl has been mis-shaped by soil pressures but otherwise it has survived extremely well save for a stress crack on an edge of the rim (this is totally stabile).

Intact

Achaemenid 5th Century BC.

Size: 15 x 4 cms
