A carved jet amulet in the form of a small ferret or stoat-like animal. The body is pierced vertically for suspension.

Jet is a type of fossilised wood which takes on the properties of a soft stone although warm to the touch and light in weight. Jet was used for jewellery in Europe and the Near East from the Stone Age and onwards but became particularly popular during the Roman period when access was gained to the jet mines of Whitby in England.
