Elamite bronze ceremonial finial. |
£100 |
|
An unusual ceremonial staff finial cast from bronze. The shape imitates the outline and form of contemporaneous axeheads and was therefore presumably intended to be used at a military ceremony or parade. The two holes in the centre would be used to affix the finial to a pole. Intact as shown, the metal is relatively heavy and does not appear to have corroded too much below the initial surface encrustation. Iran, Elamite, probably from Susa or the Luristan region, c. 2100-1800 BC Size: 11.6 x 5.5 cms For a general discussion and example of the shape please compare item 11, in PRS Moorey's "Catalogue of the Ancient Persian Bronzes in the Ashmolean Museum", Oxford 1971.
