Large calcite cylinder seal depicting Shamash

A large and unusual calcite cylinder seal decorated with numerous animal heads, abstract motifs and a dominant winged emblem of the sun god Shamash.

Syria or Anatolia, early 2nd Millennium BC

Size: 3.1 x 1.7 cms

The surface is extensively worn as seen in the photographs.

Ex. collection: Udo Schwalm, Germany (1905-1994). Acquired in Anatolia or Iran during the 1950's.
