A very dense and hard calcite sphere carved with a deep spiral furrow extending in a continuous line from the top to the bottom. This engraved ridge was probably inlaid with silver or gold (several beads with such ornamentation are known), but the object shows no sign of piercing and the decoration does not allow space for any drilling. Mesopotamia, 3rd Millennium BC. Size: 1.5 cms diameter. Small chips, otherwise intact. Formerly in the stock of a West End London dealership which ceased trading in 1988. Acquired during the 1970's/1980's on the London art market. Antiquities |Books |Ordering |Postage |Contact us |Email |Links |Shopping cart |Mailing list |Home
