Roman lamp decorated with drunken Silenos

£150

A red slip glazed pottery oil lamp with moulded decoration. The discus of the lamp is moulded with a humorous scene depicting the drunken Silenos riding an ass in a rather hap-hazard fashion.

Silenos was a generally benign demi-god associated with the perils of excessive drinking!

The lamp is signed on the base by the maker: LUCCFOR or CUCCFOR.

Roman, circa 2nd Century AD

Intact apart from the surface chips visible in the photographs.

Size: 11.3 x 3.7 cms

Provenance: Ex. private collection, Somerset, UK. Acquired c. 1960's/1970's in Palestine while founding and running a mixed Arab and Jewish charitable orphanage. Moshe Dayan was a regular visitor to the orphanage and influenced the formation of the antiquities collection.
