Roman-Egyptian pottery vessel fragment |
£150 |
|
A fragment from the side of an elaborate moulded pottery bowl or cup. The surface is decorated with a warrior who is depicted naked except for a helmet and a cloak slung over his shoulders, he holds a large oval shield in his left hand. The nakedness of the figure and the unruly hair below the helmet suggests that this is a depiction of a Roman enemy, probably forming part of a battle scene commemorating a military victory. Egypt, Roman Period, 1st or 2nd Century AD Fragment as shown, repaired from three pieces.
