Roman erotic fragment depicting the Jockey Position

£100

A fragment from the tondo of a moulded and glazed pottery oil lamp depicting an erotic scene.

A male figure is shown reclining on a couch while a female rides his torso. This position was known as "The Jockey" in the Classical period and it was the most expensive position which a prostitute could be required to supply. The reason for the high expense is not recorded but presumably lies in the increased exertion expected from the female...

Roman, c. 1st Century AD

Fragment as shown.

Size:  5.4 x 4.4 cms
