A large moulded pottery oil lamp decorated with a frontal bust of a goddess. The head of the goddess is surmounted by a pair of tusks or a crescent, indicating that the image represents either the moon goddess Luna or the Roman personification of Africa. An interesting representation which merits further research. Roman, North African factories, mid 2nd to 3rd Century AD A few small chips and a bit of cracking where the two moulded sections meet around the middle. Size: 12.9 x 8.7 cms Provenance: Ex. private collection, Somerset, UK. Acquired c. 1960's/1970's in Palestine while founding and running a mixed Arab and Jewish charitable orphanage. Moshe Dayan was a regular visitor to the orphanage and influenced the formation of the antiquities collection.
