A large fragment from the base of a marble mythological sculpture.

The main area of decoration consists of a pair of goat's legs which are shown seated with knees apart, to one side is a human hand which corresponds to the goat legs, indicating that this is part of a figure of the god Pan rather than a goat. The lower leg and foot of a human is also present.

The composition of the group is similar to other known depictions of the myth which tells of Pan teaching the shepherd boy Daphnis to play the pipes.

Roman, c. 2nd Century AD

Fragment, repaired from three large pieces with some infill.

Size: 33 x 33 x 21 cms.

Ex. UK private collection. Formerly part of the garden decoration of a house in Notting Hill, London.
