Roman marble head of Hercules |
£ 550 |
|
A white marble head from a statue of the god Hercules. The head is carved with attention to detail and a fair degree of quality. The brow is exaggerated to give an air of strength and dignity (a technique invented by the Greek sculptor Skopas), and the eyes are fixed upwards towards the sky; the head tilts at an angle to the broad powerful neck. Hercules was a popular figure for household decoration as well as votive figures; to the Classical mind, he was the embodiment of physical strength and other male virtues. Roman, 1st or 2nd century AD. Size: 7.8 x 5.7 cms, 16.7 cms with stand. Fragment as shown. Mounted on a black painted display stand.
