The head and upper body from a carved calcite or alabaster statue of a bearded figure wearing a trailing wreath in his hair and Eastern costume, his ears are pierced centrally for insertion of metal earrings.

Probably a depiction of the god Dionysos in the early Roman Classicising style.

Roman, Eastern Empire or Egypt, c. 1st Century AD

Size: 12 x 9.5 cms, 19 cms including stand.

Ex. private collection, Sussex, UK; acquired early 20th Century.

Mounted on an attractive antique painted wood display plinth.
