Roman Samian Ware decorated bowl |

A large Samian Ware red gloss pottery bowl decorated with a moulded frieze to the lower body. The decoration consists of rectangular panels separated by quatrefoil floral arrangements and framed along the upper edge by an ovolo border. Each rectangular panel is quartered diagonally and contains a bird in the upper field and ivy leaves or sprigs in two other fields, leaving the fourth and lowest field empty. The shape of the bowl is known as Dragendorff Type 37. Central or Eastern Gaul, c. late 2nd Century AD Repaired from large fragments, two sections of restoration descending from the rim. Over 90% of the bowl is original and the restoration has been carried out to a high standard. Size: 16.6 x 9.1 cms Ex. Private collection, Germany. Acquired 1960's / 1970's.
