Etruscan pottery head of a child

£450

A hollow moulded pottery head of a young child wearing a bonnet cap.

The facial details are well preserved and extensive traces of red pigment survive on the bonnet.

This type of head was produced  for votive dedications or funerary monuments and they were often made to present a realistic depiction of the person represented. Images of children are substantially rarer than those of adults.

Tip of nose restored, section missing from the lower part of the back of the neck.

Size: 12.5 x 7.5 cms
