Frankish or Germanic bronze zoomorphic janiform object |
£160 |
|
A very unusual bronze object cast in the form of the profile head of a horse. The back is undecorated and the front is decorated with chiselled lines roughly outlining a harness. The lines appear to imitate stitch-work. When the object is tilted 180 degrees, the shoulder of the horse takes on the appearance of a feline/lion's head. This item is from an old UK collection, and was believed to be Saxon, however the style of manufacture seems to point to a Continental origin of the same period. This is an interesting item but represents an area of archaeology with which we are not very familiar so we very much welcome any input from clients who are more specialised in this area. Central Europe, mid to late 1st Millennium AD Intact. Size: 5.2 x 3.5 x 0.3 cms Ex. Private collection, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.
