Gandharan schist figure of a seated banqueter |
£240 |
|
A carved schist figure of a seated and robed male holding a cup in his right hand. Depictions of Buddha were often flanked by attendants partaking in Earthly riches. The figure may also represent Buddha as the bon-viveur prince before his enlightenment. The carving of this figure is very schematic, suggesting that it was either unfinished or intended to adorn a structure in a position which was barely visible to the viewer. The simple yet technically accurate carving however gives it an appealing image when viewed by the modern eye. Afghanistan/ Northern Pakistan, late Gandhara culture, c. 4th or 5th Century AD. Intact as shown Size: 22 x 10.7 cms, 24 cms including display stand. Mounted on a black painted wooden block Ex. private collection, Sweden. Acquired 1970's/1980's.
