Chinese gilded bronze Taotie mask handles

A pair of good quality gilded and cast bronze handle appliqués in the form of monstrous Taotie masks, the protruding curled tongues each providing the attachment device for a ring handle.

China, Han Dynasty, 2nd Century BC - 2nd Century AD

Size: 4.4 x 4.6 cms and 4.8 x 4.6 cms

Ex. collection: Henk Hueffener, UK; acquired 1950's-1980's. Mr. Hueffener was a Dutch Resistance fighter during World War II. He was one of only 27 individuals to be awarded the "Heroes of Holocaust" bravery medal by the British State, and was also given the Righteous among The Nations award by Israel.
