Levantine decorated silver jewellery

£140

A finely made silver earring or hair ornament composed from a single length of metal which has been hammered, folded and incised.

The design forms a series of three parallel sections, with both terminals ending next to each other. Each section is incised with long grooves and each terminal is enhanced with further incised linear decoration.

The shape and style of this piece is copied in Archaic Greek jewellery during the early to mid 1st Millennium BC, demonstrating the important influence of Eastern metalwork on Mediterranean and Aegean art.

Levant, c. 1000 - 800 BC

Small ancient crack on back, otherwise intact.

Size: 2.2 x 1.2 cms
