Near Eastern gold spiral serpent ring |
£350 |
|
A solid gold ring formed as a triple spiral symbolising a coiled snake. This simple but decorative design was widespread in the Near East and Anatolia from the 2nd Millennium BC and became very popular during the Roman period when the terminals were often shaped as serpent's heads. The gold is robust and the ring is fully wearable. Near East, Iron Age, 1st Millennium BC Intact. The surface discolouration has been caused by proximity in the soil to ferrous remains and could be removed with simple cleaning. Size: 1.8 cms external diameter Ex. Private Collection, London, UK.
