Greek glazed and incised pottery duck vase |
£ 325 |
|
A moulded pottery vessel in the form of a duck. The majority of the surface would originally have been covered in black glaze and the finely moulded details were enlivened by extensive incised decoration. The shape of the rim would suggest that this vessel was used to contain scented oils and as various birds were regarded as love-tokens it is likely that this duck was offered as a lover's gift with a practical use as well as a symbolic meaning. Although very damaged, the figure has lost none of its charm although it can only hint at its original beauty. Greek, probably Athens, late 5th or 4th Century BC Repaired from several pieces with extensive damage and losses. Size: 13 x 7.5 cms Ex. private collection, Middlesex, UK.
