Greek Attic black glazed pottery lekythos |

Sorry this item has sold A beautifully proportioned pottery lekythos with black glazed decoration. The body of the vessel is painted entirely black except for a single horizontal line of purple which encircles the lower body, another purple band defines the top edge of the foot. The shoulder is painted with a Greek key frieze above which are two rows of rays which emerge from the neck. This lekythos demonstrates the high level of skill which was achieved by the Athenian potters and their ability to respect proportioning and aesthetics above the importance of ornamentation and clutter. Greek, Athens, early 5th Century BC Size: 14 x 5.4 cms. Intact except for the surface chipping as seen in the photographs. Provenance: Ex. collection Helen Schou, Denmark 1905-2006. Acquired at auction (Winkel & Magnussen) in 1933. Schou was a well known Danish sculptress and art collector, several of her bronze figures are on display in public parks and squares around Copenhagen. 19th Century collection label to base.
