Greek black glazed pottery dish

£100

A small black glazed pottery dish with a deep interior and a pedestal foot.

The shoulder is decorated with a series of parallel incised vertical lines, the interior is moulded with two concentric circles framing a recess in the foot.

The exact purpose of this type of vessel is not fully understood, they were either used as bowls or as stands to support larger vessels. They are occasionally referred to as "salts" though this is a 19th Century association with the shape to contemporary vessels.

Greek colonies in Italy, 5th or 4th Century BC.

Surface worn and a chip from the foot.

Size: 8.5 x 3.5 cms

Provenance: Ex. Private collection, Denmark. Acquired before 1970.
