Greek pottery caricature head of a Negroid |
£2 00 |
|
A very detailed glazed pottery caricature head of a male with strong Negroid features. This fascinating depiction was probably intended to ridicule as well as intimidate: it is thought that caricatures of foreign races were used to make children fearful or loathsome of enemies. It is not unlikely that this head represents a Nubian warrior. Greek colonies in Asia Minor or Upper Egypt (Alexandria), 3rd or 2nd Century BC Fragment as shown, several chips to the face and hair. Size: 4.2 x 3.2 cms Ex. Private collection, Germany. Acquired 1960's / 1970's. Antiquities |Books |Ordering |Postage |Contact us |Email |Links |Shopping cart |Mailing list |Home
