East Greek Negroid pottery vessel

£400

A partially glazed pottery vessel in the form of a male bust with exaggerated features which were probably intended to represent a negroid or Nubian.

The buff pale red clay is glazed in areas to define the hair and a thick beard; drapery and/or a necklace is also depicted.

The top of the head is mounted with a narrow flaring spout which suggests that the vessel may have been used to contain oils.

East Greek, probably from the island of Rhodes, 6th Century BC

Spout re-attached with a small area of loss. General wear to surface as shown.

Size: 8.7 x 4.1 cms

Ex. UK private collection. Probably acquired form Charles Ede Ltd, inventory number 2224.
