East Greek Negroid pottery vessel |

A partially glazed pottery vessel in the form of a male bust with exaggerated features which were probably intended to represent a negroid or Nubian. The buff pale red clay is glazed in areas to define the hair and a thick beard; drapery and/or a necklace is also depicted. The top of the head is mounted with a narrow flaring spout which suggests that the vessel may have been used to contain oils. East Greek, probably from the island of Rhodes, 6th Century BC Spout re-attached with a small area of loss. General wear to surface as shown. Size: 8.7 x 4.1 cms Ex. UK private collection.
