Rare shabti of Nes-Pauti-Taui, ex. Althorp House

£1500

A fine blue glazed faience shabti with black painted details and inscription for the priest of Amun, Nes-Pauti-Taui.

Shabtis for this owner are rare; it is thought that they were acquired from the Egyptian government by the Kunsthistorischesmuseum in Vienna in 1878. The circumstances of their appearance is not known but the extremely fine wooden coffin of Nes-Pauti-Taui (now in Vienna) was discovered in Cache II at Deir el-Bahri in 1891. The Book of the Dead manuscript for Nes-Pauti-Taui survives in fragments which are now housed in the Vatican Museum, the British Museum and the Dallas Public Library.

Egypt, Thebes, 21st Dynasty, c. 1000 BC

Repaired on the head, several ancient cracks and surface chips as seen in the photographs.

Size: 12.5 x 4.4 cms.

Ex. collection: Viscount Charles Spencer, the 9th Earl Spencer; Althorp House, Northumberland, UK. This item is thought to have been collected by John Poyntz Spencer, the 5th Earl Spencer (1835-1910). The 5th Earl held several important political positions including First Lord of the Admiralty and Lord Lieutenant of Ireland.

The Spencer family is perhaps best known today for the 9th Earl's sister, Lady Diana Spencer who was to become the iconic and ill-fated Princess Diana of Wales. Althorp House was Diana's childhood home and now the location of her final resting place.

Other notable Spencers include Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire who was  probably as well known as Diana in the 18th Century. The 1st Earl Spencer was the great-grandson of the 1st Duke of Marlborough.
