New Kingdom grey faience tile fragment |
£350 |
|
A fragment from a rare grey glazed faience wall tile. The surface is moulded with part of a pair of wings, with distinct feather patterns. As there are no anthropomorphic features along the wings (which would indicate a deity such as a winged protective Isis), this is presumably part of a scene of a bird being carried to a sacrifice; possibly a goose being carried by the neck as its wings flail behind it. The glazed surface is fired onto a thin layer of fine faience/silica, under which is a thick layer of coarse sand "cement" which forms the majority of the depth of the tile. Egypt, New Kingdom, XIXth Dynasty 1293-1185 BC Fragment as shown Size: 10 x 8 x 2.2 cms Provenance: Ex. Private collection, UK.
