Egyptian wood sarcophagus hand

£200

A carved wooden hand from the front panel of a large sarcophagus. The hand is carved with elegant slender fingers and retains traces of red and yellow gesso-based painted decoration. The yellow skin tone would suggest that the hand originated from a female sarcophagus.

Egypt, 1st Millennium BC

Intact as shown. The details are finer than the photographs imply.

Size: 20.6 x 7.6 cms

Provenance: Ex. private collection, Dorset, UK. Acquired during the 19th Century. This forms part of a collection of a few dozen objects which have remained untouched in an attic since the 1960's.
