Egyptian XVIIIth Dynasty zoomorphic scaraboid

£75

Sorry this item has sold

A fragmentary but rare example of a carved steatite scaraboid seal in the form of  recumbent moufflon or goat.

Both sides of the goat's head are preserved and the long sweeping horns are perfectly carved as they reach over his shoulder. The hieroglyphic inscription on the base is partially preserved and very detailed, but I do not think that it would be possible to discern the meaning of the inscription from the remaining partial ciphers.

A detailed and well-preserved fragment, though the photographs are not very complimentary. The break following the line of the original suspension hole makes it a useful study piece.

Egypt, New Kingdom, probably XVIIIth Dynasty, c. 15th - 14th Century BC

Fragment as shown, good strong surface with glossy patina.

Size: 1.75 x 1.3 cms.

Ex. private collection, London, UK.
