Cypriot Bronze Age pottery ram vessel

£600

A grey burnished pottery vessel in the form of a ram with a suspension loop on the back. The vessel has an opening on the chest area of the animal but the exact purpose of this shape is not known although it is highly likely to have served a ritual or votive purpose.

The body of the ram is modelled in a simple and abstract manner but the face is surprisingly detailed including defined eyes, nostrils and mouth.

Cyprus, Middle Bronze Age, 1900-1650 BC

Repaired from several pieces, some surface wear, and the tip of the right horn has been restored.

Size: 14.4 x 8.4 cms

Ex. collection: Jorgen Jacobsen, Bornholm, Denmark. Acquired while on UN duty with the Danish peace-keeping forces on Cyprus (Dancon X/XI) between October 1968 and October 1969. This item is part of a large collection of Cypriot antiquities acquired by Mr Jacobsen from antiques shops in Cyprus during his one-year stay on the island.
