Islamic mosaic fragment re-using ancient tesserae

A fragment of wall or floor decoration consisting of re-used ancient stone tesserae set in a later plaster matrix. The stones include porphyry and green breccia which were both highly valued in antiquity and reserved for use in the finest buildings.

Islamic, 17th or 18th Century AD

Fragment as shown. The plaster matrix is very stabile and this piece could easily be used as a paperweight or similar ornament.

Size: 8.5 x 1.7 cms

Acquired in the late 19th Century. Probably collected by the archaeologist, architect and author Arthur E. Henderson FSA, FRIBA, RBA.
