Roman red ware "recycled" pottery bowl

£80

A pedestal foot from a large red ware pottery vase which was broken in antiquity and re-used to create a small bowl.

What is now the foot of the present bowl was once the tondo of the larger vessel which had been ground down to form a round edge, the slip covering on the underside of the present foot also testifies to this being an example of "early recycling".

Roman, North African colonies, c. 3rd or 4th Century AD

A surface chip on the outside surface otherwise in good condition.

Size: 8 x 3.6 cms.

Ex. private collection, UK. Acquired in London during the 1980's/90's.
