A small black glazed pottery dish with a curved bowl and tall base. The shoulder is decorated with a vertical moulded ovolo pattern. The exact purpose of this type of vessel is not fully understood, they were either used as bowls or as stands to support larger vessels. They are occasionally referred to as "salts" though this is a 19th Century association with the shape to contemporary vessels. Greek colonies in Italy, 4th or 3rd Century BC. Surface worn and some losses to the foot. Size: 8.3 x 3.2 cms Provenance: Ex. Private collection, Denmark. Acquired before 1970.
