A fragment of polished porphyry from the important ancient city of Ephesus in Asia Minor. Porphyry was highly valued in antiquity and only used for the finest imperial or public statuary.

Roman, Ephesus, 1st or 2nd Century AD

Fragment as shown

Size: 6.5 x 5.2 cms

Acquired in the early 20th Century. Probably collected by the archaeologist, architect and author Arthur E. Henderson FSA, FRIBA, RBA.

Accompanied by an old typed label: " Piece of porphrey. Bored and turned. ?Part of a fountain. Found near Temple, Ephesus. 1st Century BC"
